Quick Note: My apologies for not writing for quite some time. I have some new inspiration, some new ideas, and some previous food experiences to share. We'll begin with my most recent trip:
New Orleans; or as we heard it said many times: Nawlins. What a culinary delight to be here. I was here on a business trip, but as usual, was able to go to a few hot culinary spots; thanks to my work for paying. Speaking of which, I must say that it is really nice to have my work send me places a few times during the year. My wife comes with me on occasion. We call those "smart-trips"; we just pay for her flight and hotel, transportation, etc is paid for. She came with me to New Orleans as this was each of our first times going to Louisiana.
While at my conference for work I was able to listen to a restaurant critic, Tom Fitzmorris, discuss the history of restaurants in New Orleans. Two interesting facts:
1) Before Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans, there were approximately 8000 restaurants. Now there are over 12,000; a 50% increase. New Orleans is definitely a hot foodie town!
2) Before Hurricane Katrina, most diners would be expected to dress up when dining at high-end restaurants. After Katrina, many diners only had shorts, t-shirts, and jeans. They called it "Katrina-Casual." This style has now been accepted at most restaurants, with only one or two still requiring jackets.
Over the next 9 days I'll share some of our culinary expeditions and conclusions on the food of New Orleans.
